I decided to choose this tune for the first review in 2010 because with it, I can set the standard for 2010-productions very high right from the get-go and also have a good excuse to downgrade possible other releases which are still coming. Muahaha. I'm evil.
But seriously, when I got this record in my hands, I immediately knew that I have to write a review as fast as possible. Everyone shall know about this record and buy it. And no, I'm not getting paid for praising it. I normally bought the record.
So, what do you get? You might think it's a rough stepper because I'm so happy with it? Well, you're wrong. The tune is a crucial fresh rootical one with a trombone version on the A-Side and a truely massive dub version on the B-Side. And that version particularly drives me crazy. It is as perfect as can be. You get a crispy drum section with fat beats, dropping heavy and pushing extremely forward. It's a different drum style as well, not the usual uninspired one drop. I wouldn't wonder if the producer originally comes from a different musical background. A++.
So with this demanding drum section, what I just need is a fitting bassline. And well, thunder bass you get here! This bass goes so low that the things in my room are vibrating. Can't wait to play this track on the MoonBass Sound.
The rest of the song is a smooth background, slightly dubbed with lovely skanky vibes and the trombone thrown in from time to time. And then the song is already over and you don't believe that it was more than just a minute and you need to replay the track immediately. I end up in a song-loop for 3 days in a row now. Groundhog Day style.
Also necessary to mention is the great sound and pressing quality. Russ the Disciple mastered the tune and man, did he do a good job. And where did they press the record? I adjust my mixer so that all the 7"es end up on one red bar. And then I put on this one and the mixer goes beyond the 3 red bars, so I have to adjust it.
All in all, this is one of the clearest 5 star ratings I ever gave in all the 735 reviews yet. "Upfull 'n' Upfront Horns Lick" seems to be the right tune for me. Maybe for you, too?! www.easybeatproductions.com
