Well, what else would you expect from a Jah Tubbys release rather than a massive, heavy stepping, bass driven dub release?
Russ, the everlasting Disciple, does what he does best: producing rough dub steppers. It is not a big secret that I am not a too big fan of his latest roots releases. I do not consider them to be authentic Disciples style. Disciples, that means Addis Ababa, Prowling Lion. This is what he is loved for, this is what the people want to hear. That the old tunes have lately been reissued by the Disciples Vintage label says all.
So, here, on Jah Tubbys, people can always count on what they get. A Jah Tubbys release does not have to be pre-listened. You see the name, you can buy it. And in the exceptional rare case that the release is not satisfying, you just wait one or two years and then sell your copy for high money on Discogs.
But this is not necessary for "The Rush". This one is a classic sounding 90s Disciples riddim, rushing forward indeed with a fast riddim section and lively skanking sounds. Beneath is a subtle kinda flutey thingy which adds something loveable to the song. As for the Verse 2... well, no words can actually describe it. Wild! 5 stars.
The B-Side sees a "Heartical Stepper", again in best Disciples fashion, groovy and moody. Classic instrumentation, surely reminding a bit of the Jah Shaka-Disciples-times. The beat goes on and the bass rolls down the hill and up again. Still, the song did not find it's way to my heart yet, so 3,5 stars for that one.
All in all, I would say that this is close to 5 stars. You get two heavy stepping, strictly dubwise tunes with nuff bass power. What do you want more?
