Hm, the third 5 star review in a row... Kanka, what shall I say? Look at my other reviews about Kanka (you can now sort the archive alphabetically which means you can find them quite easy, isn't that a nice new feature?!) and you know what I think of his music. I could also just give the answer directly here: I think a lot of it. ;) And so it seems no wonder that I love this 10", which by the way is his first vinyl appearance without sharing it with another artists, which was released at the beginning of 2008 on Hammerbass in France. You get a fast and driving stepper on the A-Side featuring a nice vocal contribution by MC Phil Pilgrim which reminds a bit of the vocals on Munky Lee's "Roots from the Rocks" 10" from some years ago (if you remember that one, then you know what I mean). The tune is guaranteed to work everywhere and every time, I'm sure. Of course, a dub version is available as well, no worries. Even better though is the B-Side (as you might know, I usually tend to prefer B-Sides - not in purpose though; maybe it's because I prefer outsiders, haha): "Step Forward" is a massive stepper with a rough bassdrum and a deep bass sound. Perfectly for a nice soundsystem session - or for just enjoying at home. But this is nothing compared to the let's call it bonus tune: "Skunky". Now, come on guys, you put this song there for me, right? It is originally from the 2005 release "Don't Stop Dub" and on my CD, there is a little scratch - on exactly this tune. So I couldn't listen to it anymore for a long time. But now they extra added it to this vinyl again. Thank you very much for that! I just love this crazily distorted bass sound. A++. P. S. While just googling for Kanka, I found out that his albums are available as torrents as well. Where did the world go... |
