After I was not pleased with the last Dub Terror release, I was very sceptical about the "Shinobi EP" and expected the worst. Well, sometimes it's a good idea to expect nothing because then you cannot be so disappointed and if you're lucky, you will even be very positively surprised. In this case, it's a mix of both: I like the original "Shinobi Warrior" tune a lot. It's deeply grooving, laid-back dub riddim with an excellent vocal contribution by Echo Ranks. Definitely a nice one, especially when the flute fades in, the full srength of the tune comes to the surface. The dub version lowers the bass and adds some interesting keyboard effects in the very back of the riddim (outer space effects, you know). Some smooth echoes round up the tune. 4 stars. Very problematic for my ears is once again the B-Side which features a Dubstep version (vocal & dub). You get this typical wobbling subbass and, as usual, boring drums. I really don't understand this Dubstep thing. Twostep was already terrible, but Dubstep even tops that (in a negative way). To be fair, I shall mention that the Dubstep version is a dubby as can be with nice skanking and also the bass could be worse. But in combination with these beats and all that dubstep stands for, it makes me just shiver and put another record on the turntable. 2 stars. I have said it before, and I demand ;) it again: NO Dubstep on a roots & dub release, please. Make an extra Dubstep remix 10" or something but don't put me into a position where I have to pay some 10 Euros for only one side of a record. I'd prefer a 7" then, that's cheaper. Thank you. |
