A candidate for the "record of the year award" (and I'm not talking
about dub only but music in general) is on it's way from Southeast Poland:
Ragana, a four piece live dub band featuring singer Jagha are responsible for
something which can hardly be described with plain words. It has to be heard -
and felt.
The 9 track album "So Many Reverbs to Cross" will be officially
available from August on and I have to say that I seldomly wanted to encourage
anyone to get a record as now. What you get on this album is some of the
deepest, most crucial, strongest, best dub records I ever came across. And I
came across many, of course.
The instruments are played live, the bass player for example was
"borrowed" from Poland's no. 1 reggae band Paprika Korps and the bass
could really not be crispier, crystal-clearer and deeper as on this CD. The
drums are a story for itself as well, they must really be mixed by a
perfectionist. All analogue effects as well. You hear it. It's a nice warm sound
indeed. "Oh totally wow", if I might quote Cassie Ainsworth...
A guitar and a keyboard provide some serious skanking and harmonies and as an
add-on, the Crispy Horns are featured with their famous brasses. On top of all
that you will find singer Jagha, who does a mix of singing and telling on the
album, most pleasingly for my ears she does not try to sound reggae-esque at all
but instead she sounds just as I think she would sound if she would sing as
herself. What a sentence... It's a comfort for the ears to hear her vocals.
I don't know how often I played my favourite tune "Prayer" since I
have the song. It immediately made it into my top dub list of all time. And it's
only one of 9 outstanding tunes. Seriously, here is not one minor tune on the
CD. All tunes are A+ or the equivalent of the best grade. Hm, I might as well
write:
;)
Well, I don't really know what else to write except that you should check www.ragana.pl
for updates on when you can get this CD. You want it! Don't question my
authority! ;p
